October 2013 Meeting Reminder
The next meeting of the CCW is Monday October 28,2013 at the Clarke Central High school Construction Technology Building beginning at 6 PM. Our demonstrator for the October meeting will be Chris Woodall. Chris is well known for his thread chasing and is featured in Ron Brown’s DVDs for thread chasing and for his work on wood stabilization. We have asked him to spend a brief time on follow up to our last month presentation on thread chasing and show some of his work and his tools. This will be the first time he has demonstrated for our club but there are several members of our club that know him. Following his brief words about thread chasing, his program will focus on the use of the stick fast home stabilization kit to be able to stabilize your own wood for turning. Also he will show a CA finish on something other than pens (Christmas ornament or lidded box). He will demonstrate this technique on a Christmas ornament because we are getting close to the holiday season.
September 2013 Meeting Reminder
Our next club meeting is this coming Monday, September 30, 2013 at the Clarke Central High School Construction Technology Lab at 6 PM. The demonstrator for the month is Mike Peace, President of the Chattahoochee Woodturners. His presentation will be demonstrating the traditional way of cutting threads using hand thread chasers. He will explain the difference in cutting threads using a threading jig and show his shop made jig as well as a low cost threading jig from the UK. He will also demonstrate the use of shop made ancillary tools he uses in hand threading including a recess tool, pyramid tool and round skew.
Remember to bring the finial you have turned since the last meeting and the best one will receive a nice prize.
Members are also reminded to return any items checked out from the library that haven’t been returned.
August 2013 Meeting Reminder
Our next meeting is Monday, August 26, 2013 at 6 PM in the Construction Technology Lab, Clarke Central High School. The demonstrator for this meeting is Hal Simmons. Hal has been a demonstrator before but it has been some time ago. He will be turning an angel, finial and a door knob with a rosette face. He will talk a lot about and use various turning tools as they were engineered to be used including the skew. He is well known for the use of the skew in wood turning.
July 2013 Meeting Reminder
The monthly meeting of the Classic City Woodturners will be on Monday, July 29, 2013 at the Construction Technology Lab at Clarke Central High School beginning at 6 PM. The demonstrator for July is John Lucas. He has been a guest of our club previously but, his program this time will be something that has not been done before. He will use a router in combination with the lathe. He will use the router to accomplish various effects on spindles and bowls. The router is mounted differently than has been described in various articles and on You tube videos. He will demonstrate the mounting of a platform on the tool rest and the mounting of his router on this platform. He will demonstrate the use of his routed to flute turnings, to do inlays and other uses. John is making a platform specifically for our lathe and the distance from the top of the banjo to the centerline of the headstock. The demonstration will include the use of the indexing feature for fluting or other routing where specific radial settings are required.
At our last meeting on June 24, President Lou Kudon challenged members to prepare a wall hanging using the techniques that our demonstrator, Jack Morse, used to enhance the wall hanging he had prepared. The best turning, as determined by member vote, will receive a nice prize.
The club has been alerted to the possibility that we may loose our meeting place at Clarke Central HS. This issue will be further discussed at this next meeting. If anyone has suggestions of other places the club could meet, please be prepared to bring them up at the meeting.
