September 2014 Meeting Reminder

PlannerFellow Woodturners, Our next meeting of the Classic City Woodturners is Tuesday, September 2, 2014 beginning at 6 PM at the Lyndon House Art Center, 293 Hoyt Street, Athens, GA. We have a special treat this month for our demonstrator – it is our own Jim Talley. He plans a two fold demo. First, will be a demonstration of the turning of Christmas Ornaments from the simple to the more difficult. This will get you in the mood to begin turning your own Christmas Ornaments in preparation for the club Christmas Party on Monday, December 15, 2014. Also, the club is planning a project to raise funds for the Food Bank of North East Georgia by selling your turned and donated Christmas Ornaments during the Lickskillet Artists Market at the Lyndon House Art Center on October 25,2014. Second, everyone is asked to bring a turned item that didn’t turn out as anticipated. He will discuss some possible ways to correct or enhance these “mistakes” to save the piece. He will also discuss any specific tools you may be having trouble with or questions about. So, bring your questions, problem turnings, wood and tools. Jim will be at the Melting Point at 4:45 for dinner if you would like to converse with him. We also need help beginning at 5:30 PM to help set-up for the meeting.

We mention again that Club Officer nominations for 2015 are being sought, specifically President and Vice President. Club Officer positions and duties are listed in the Club By Laws at http://classiccitywoodturners.comabout-ccw/bylaws/. Also, at the web page current and upcoming events are posted. Bookmark this page and refer to it for up to date information at any time.

Another event of interest is the Lyndon House Art Center Harvest Festival on October 23, 2014. This event is an annual celebration of old time crafts and rural life and gives participants a way to learn about some of Georgia’s history first hand. The demonstrations run from 9:30 AM until 1 PM. Club President Lou Kudon is seeking help from club members that would be interested in demonstrating the old time and pioneering tools. Contact Lou at lkudon@gmail.com.

Hope to see you there!

Our demonstrator for the month is Don Russell who will demonstrate turning in the polychromatic style.  You ask? what is that.  It is the art of cutting staves of different grains, colors and textures from wood and assembling them into blanks to be turned into a bowl.  These processes, when learned can then be used to make lamps, wine bottle stoppers, pens and many other projects.  He will cover design, determining the angles, cutting, gluing, turning and  finishing.  It will also include tool choice, tool use, sharpening as well as other processes.  The class is for beginners to advanced turners.

If you would like to meet Don, he will be at dinner at the Melting Point beginning at 4:45 PM.  You can park at the Lyndon House and walk to the Melting Point.  If you can’t make that come on to the Lyndon House at 5:30 PM to help in set up of equipment for the demonstration.  There will not be sandwich fixings at the Lyndon House this month.

Orders for club polo shirts with the stitched club logo will be taken.  They are $25 each.  Also, nominations for 2015 club officers are being sought.  If you would be interested in serving please let one of the current officers know.  Elected officer positions and duties are stated in the club bylaws  web page http://classiccitywoodturners.comabout-ccw/bylaws/ .

There are a couple of upcoming opportunities to demonstrate, display and sell your turned items. They are the North Georgia Folk Festival on October 11 at Sandy Creek Park, Oconee Fall Festival on October 18 in downtown Watkinsville and the Lick Skillet Art Show at the Lyndon House on October 25.  If you would like to participate in any of these opportunities speak with club President Lou Kudon.  Also, if you do you will be required to work at the club table for a period of time manning the sales, demonstration or promoting the club.

Our demonstrator for the month is Peggy Schmid.  She will be demonstrating turning natural edge platters and adding texture to the turned piece.  Turning platters can be challenging, especially if it has a natural edge.  She will show her method for mounting and turning natural edge burls with irregular edges and surfaces. She will also show how she incorporates textures and color to enhance the design.  there are a multitude of opportunities when texturing and she will show how to take patterns from nature and how to balance these patterns optically.
