Classic City Woodturners

The May 2012 CCW meeting will be held Monday, May 21st at 6:00 p.m. at the Construction Lab at the Clarke Central High School.    Note that this is a change from our regular meeting time due to Memorial Day falling on the last Monday of the month.  Our very own Jim Underwood will present a pen turning demonstration. In it he will discuss pen kit options, show members how to prep the pen blank, turn the pen body, apply and polish a CA glue finish, and assemble a pen. In the course of doing so, he will give tips on creating a better pen, and how to eliminate or minimize common problems when turning pens.  Bring your bowls for the first round of bowl challenge shapes to the meeting, as well.  Visitors are welcome!  Also, the Marigold Festival is this upcoming Saturday, May 19th, in Winterville.  CCW will have a demonstration booth.  If you are interested in helping out, please contact Walter McRae at wmcrae@uga.edu.  We will be turning some items, as well as displaying previously turned items.  More information on the Marigold Festival can be found here.

It was great seeing so many familiar faces at the Southern States Symposium this year.  Off the top of my head, I can recall at least 12 CCW members/spouses that attended.  I think there may have been more, but it is still Monday, so you shouldn’t expect total recall from me. 🙂  After addressing some technical glitches, the Symposium seemed to go rather smoothly.  Folks enjoyed themselves and learned a lot.  The only thing that went wrong was that they STILL didn’t call my number for one of the scholarships. 🙁  I’m sure this was just some sort of oversight that they will correct for future symposiums!

This month’s meeting will be on Saturday, April 21, at the Lyndon House Arts Center featuring a Nick Cook turning demonstration.  The cost for CCW members will be $10 and $25 for non-members.  Check-in begins at 9:30 AM.  Lunch will be on your own from 12 noon until 1 PM.  The demonstration continues until approximately 3:30 PM when the raffle will be held and conclude by 4 PM.  There will not be a member’s gallery but there will be a raffle.  Please remember to bring something for the raffle.  The library will not be open but remember to return items checked out earlier to the May meeting.  We hope to see everyone there!

The Southern States Symposium for 2012 will be held April 27, 28, and 29th at the Georgia Mountains Conference Center in Gainesville, GA.  This is a great opportunity to see some very talented demonstrators.  More information can be found at http://www.southernstatessymposium.org/

The March 2012 CCW meeting will be held Monday, March 26th at 6:00 p.m. at the Construction Lab at the Clarke Central High School.    Michael and Cynthia Gibson will be demonstrating for us.   Michael will be rough-turning the body and lid of a teapot, and Cynthia will give us a brief pyrography demonstration with multiple tips of a woodburner.  Please remember to pay dues for 2012 if you haven’t done so already.  Visitors are welcome!
