September 2017 CCW Reminder

ReminderFor our September 2017 meeting Bill Lynch is our demonstrator.  Bill has not demonstrated for our club before so this will be his first time.

For the evening Bill will be turning a Twisted Candle Stand using multi axis turning.  He has presented this demonstration to the Gwinnett Woodworkers turning group.  We have had several demonstrators in the past demo multi axis turning but no one to date has used this technique to turn a candle stick.  Should be a great demonstration and offer something for the beginners and well-seasoned turners.

Bill is active in various woodturning clubs and has taught at Eagle Ranch, which is a program for troubled kids.  Bill has demonstrated for the Barnsville Club.  You can find him on You Tube where he is featured in various presentations.

We are very fortunate to have Bill and we need to make a good first impression by having a good turnout.  Summer is over, kids are back to school and as we prepare for the upcoming football and holiday season, we can get back in the “groove” of things by attending this September meeting and welcoming Bill to our club.

Remember to invite and bring a friend and also bring some wood or other material for our raffle!

August 2017 CCW Meeting Reminder

Fellow Woodturners,

For our August 1, 2017 meeting of the Classic City Woodturners, we will have Jim Kall as our demonstrator.  Jim is a relatively new member to our club having relocated  from south Florida about a year and a half ago. He was a member of the Gold Coast Woodturners for about 12 years. He demonstrated many times for his club in Florida and he has volunteered to do demonstrations for our  club and we have gladly taken him up on the offer.

Jim will be making his long neck vase.  We need a good turn out.  Typically this time of year turnout is light, so for this meeting we will have pizza and soft drinks provided by the club.  I am a firm believer in  the saying “if you feed them they will come”; at least I think that is how it goes.  Make sure to be there for free eats and to see Jim in action.  Bring a friend and guest.  Also bring something for the raffle.

Come early (5:30 PM) to help with setup and enjoy the pizza and soft drinks.  We meet at the Lyndon House Art Center, 293 Hoyt St, Athens.  Usual start time is 6 PM and finish by 9 PM following clean-up.

No July 2017 CCW Meeting

Fellow Woodturners, There will not be a meeting on July 4th.  The next meeting will be on August 1, 2017.  Enjoy your 4th!!!

June 2017 CCW Meeting Reminder

Fellow Woodturners, our June CCW meeting is Tuesday, June 6 at the Lyndon House Arts Center, 293 Hoyt St, Athens.  The meeting begins at 6 PM.  If you can help with setup please come by 5:30 PM.

For our  June 6, 2017 meeting we will have Don Douthart as our demonstrator.  Dan will be demonstrating making of his ring box without the use of jam chucks commonly required for finishing the top and bottom.   For those who are interested Dan has a You Tube video on this when he presented to the Gwinnet Woodworkers.  A link to this site is:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83tPSJYTRHI

We need a good turnout for this  demonstration, so remember to be sure to bring a guest and some wood for the raffle.  Our attendance has been low lately and we really need to have a good turnout this month.  Our raffle proceeds help to keep demonstrators coming.

May 2017 CCW Meeting Reminder

Fellow Woodturners, the May meeting of CCW is scheduled for Tuesday, May 2nd.  It begins at 6 PM at the Lyndon House Arts Center, 293 Hoyt St, Athens.

For our May 2, 2017 meeting we will be having a clinic on sharpening so bring your gouges and skews.  Our program demonstrator will be Ken Rizza from Woodturners Wonders.  Ken will bring his grinder setup with the CBN wheels.  This will be a hands on sharpening exercise.  The lathe will be set up so that each participant can practice with his or her sharpened tool.  Skews are particularly difficult to sharpen but with Ken’s guidance this is made simple.  Ken will also demonstrate honing of the skew with a CBN hone.  This hone can put a razor sharp edge on a skew.

Ken will also demonstrate other products he has including various tool handles, sanding system for bowls and other turnings; his special lights that really can light up turnings and other items.  Ken will have most of his products there for sale and can accept any type of payment.

We need a good turnout for this hands on demonstration, so remember to not only bring your tools to be sharpened but also be sure to bring a guest and some wood for the raffle!
