June 2013 Meeting Reminder

PlannerThe monthly meeting of the Classic City Woodturners is on Monday, June 24, 2013 at 6 PM in the Clarke Central High School Construction Technology Lab.  The demonstrator for the month is Jack Morse.  He will focus on finishing and demonstrate embellishing turned items with color and texture.  He will have several examples of types of embellishing that he has done and will demonstrate procedures to sand and obtain the types of finishes on his samples.  Also, he will show how to make tools that can be used in the finishing process and make it easier.
If you would like to meet Jack earlier, he and Charles Armentrout will be having supper at Jason’s Deli on Alps Road at 4:45 Dutch Treat. Join them for this time of food and fellowship. 

May 2013 Meeting Reminder — DATE CHANGE!

MC900432550Our May meeting is this coming Monday, May 20, 2013 due to the Memorial Day Holiday on May 27.  Our program for the month will be a hands-on sharpening workshop.  There will four – five work stations set up, each with different sharpening systems.  For example, there will be a Tormek, a Sorby sanding belt, the Wolverine jig and others.  Following a demonstration of each system, members will be divided into groups and rotate around the different stations.  Members are encouraged to bring at least two of their own tools they want sharpened as well as safety glasses.  Everyone observing the tool sharpening should be wearing safety glasses.  The lathe will be set up with a blank so that sharpened tools can be tried out.  As a special treat, the club will be providing pizza and drinks. Remembering Dean Brady

Our friend and fellow turner, Dean Brady, passed away last Thursday.  Below is a copy of the obituary as well as a gallery of the work he has shared with us over the past couple of years.  Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.  Dean, you will be missed.

Mr. John Dean Brady, age 70, of 3026 Hardman Morris Road, Colbert, Georgia, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospice House in Bogart, Georgia. The son of the late Finus A. and Ruby Ramsey Brady, he was born on June 9, 1942 in Stephens County, Georgia where he lived for most of his life, having lived in Colbert for the past fifteen years. He was a retired cabinet maker and attended The Riverside Baptist Church in Colbert and was a member of Classic City Wood Turners. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Crisp. He is survived by his wife, Christine Peters Brady of the home, two sons and daughter-in-law, Mike and Holly Brady of Sugar Hill, Georgia and John Brady of Plant City, Florida, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Faye and James Russell of Toccoa, Georgia and Patsy and Kevin Allen of Jefferson, Georgia, four grandchildren, Josh Brady, Scott Brady, Chris Brady, and Brooke Brady, and two great grandchildren, Zavier and Liana.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 22, 2013, 2 O’clock, at the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home with The Reverend Joe Woods officiating. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers and need to assemble at the funeral home by 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Mike Brady, Josh Brady, Scott Brady, Shannon St. Germain, Chris Brady, and Steve Crisp. The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the Acree-Davis Funeral Home from 12 Noon until the service hour on Monday. Online condolences can be made by visiting www.acree-davisfh.com Interment will be in the Carnes Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The Acree-Davis Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Mr. John Dean Brady.

April 2013 Meeting Reminder

ReminderThe regular monthly meeting of the CCW is Monday April 29, 2013 at Clarke Central HS Technology Lab.  The meeting begins at 6 PM.  Our program for April will be presented by Phil Colson.  Phil has presented to our club before and most find him knowledgeable and entertaining.  His program this month will be to go over his procedure to cutting a bowl blank from a half log and getting the best blank from the log.  He will go over off center turning and turn a “weed pot”using his off center techniques.  He will go over sharpening procedures he uses especially using 60 grit wheels.  He also promises several jokes.  I asked him to bring his elf tool and demonstrate it.

March 2013 Meeting Reminder

The regular monthly meeting of the CCW is Monday March 25, 2013 at Clarke Central HS Technology Lab. The meeting begins at 6 PM.  Mr. Don Geiger will be our demonstrator.  His program for March will include tuning up a grinder, sharpening techniques, and some in-depth information on rough turning bowls.  He will also cover re-mounting the bowl after drying with either a jam or vaccuum chuck.  His bio and proposed demo can be found under the Schedule link under the Meetings tab on our homepage.

Don’t forget that 2013 dues of $30 per individual or $35 per family are now due. Bring your check book or cash.
