April 2017 CCW Meeting Reminder

Fellow Woodturners, our next meeting is Tuesday April 4, 2017 at the Lyndon House Arts center, 293 Hoyt St, Athens.  If you can come early at 5:30 and help with setup it would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks last month to Drew, John, Nancy and Lynn for their help and of course all in the clean up.  Remember, dues are due.

For our April meeting we have Steve Mellott as our demonstrator.  Steve has provided us with the attached brochure that outlines his bio and demonstrations that he has made in the past.

For our evening Steve will be providing a brief presentation and discussion of his “dizzy” bowl.  After this discussion, Steve will turn his “Beads of Courage” box shown below.  Beads of Courage is a charity that Steve supports through his turnings.  This organization is a 501C3 tax exempt organization dedicated to helping children with serious illness tell their stories of survival.  It is a very worthwhile organization and to learn more about it Google Beads of Courage. The work by Steve and other turners who support this organization help a large number of at risk pediatric oncology patients.

The box is made from several different woods as you can see from the picture below.  It measures about 6” or more in diameter and approximately 6” tall. This demonstration should be very good and prove to be worthwhile for all attendees and guests.

Remember to invite and bring a friend and also bring some wood or other material for our raffle.

March 2017 Meeting Reminder

ReminderThe CCW will meet at 6 PM on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at the Lyndon House Arts Center, 293 Hoyt St, Athens, GA.

For our March meeting we will have Peggy Schmid as our demonstrator.  Peggy may be the first woman demonstrator we have had or at least the first in a while.  Peggy’s work can be seen at her web site  http://www.peggyschmid.com/

For our evening’s demonstration she will be making what she calles her “, “Special Memory Boxes”.  These small lidded boxes were inspired by  oriental bamboo rice boxes.  They are 3 to 4 inches tall and made from 2″ square stock.  Each side has an original woodburned scene and each box is signed and numbered.

When you go to her site click on the link “More”, then “helping my sister” and you will read about Peggy’s devotion to helping her sister fight a very serious medical condition by making and selling these unique boxes.

Remember to invite and bring a friend and bring some wood for our raffle.  If you haven’t paid dues for 2017 yet, remember to bring them also.

February 2017 Meeting Reminder

Fellow Woodturners,  our next meeting is Tuesday, Feb 7, 2017 at 6 PM at the Lyndon House Arts Center.  The demonstrator is Harvey Meyer.  He will turn one of his famous “basket illusion” projects.  You are invited to view his work at his web site www.harveymeyer.com  under gallery where you will see several of his finished works.  This demo proves to be fascinating and should be enjoyable for all members and guests regardless of the skill level one has.

Please plan on coming , bring a guest and something for the raffle.  2017 dues will also be collected.  Individual dues are $30 and family(spouse, child) is $35 – a real bargain.  The Lyndon House is at 293 Hoyt St, Athens.

Happy New Year!! (January 2017 Meeting Reminder)

wood-1461777_1920I am pleased to announce that our demonstrator for January 3, 2017 meeting will be Frank Bowers. Frank was scheduled earlier in 2016 but conflicts prevented this from happening. We are fortunate to have him for our January meeting. We need a big turnout. The meeting will be at 6pm at the Lyndon House.

Frank has demonstrated at our club before and as most turners know he is an instructor in various places in Atlanta and also has numerous YouTube videos. I have participated in some of his classes and he is very good as an instructor and demonstrator.

For our January meeting we have arranged for him to do two projects. The first will be turning a 7-8” long hollow vessel from a 4’ square piece of Ambrosia maple. The vessel will be hollowed without the need of hollowing tools. He has this on YouTube if you are interested in seeing it; however seeing this in person will be much better at our club meeting. When he gets through you will not find a glue line.

The second project will be turning a small three corner bowl from a piece of cherry. This second project itself will be special.

We have a full schedule for this meeting and promise to keep the business part of the meeting short so we can get all of this in. I challenge each person to come and bring a guest. Invite someone you know even if they do not do woodturning; bringing guests is the ideal way to get our club out in front of more people and build up our membership. A large turnout would be great.

Plan on being there and plan on bringing a guest and a piece of wood for the raffle. Also note that dues for 2017 are due. 2017 will be a good year. I have lined up many excellent demonstrators and we need to get members and their guests to our meetings and make a good showing. Let’s get this year started off with a bang.
